THE ANNEXATION OF THE PUNJAUB

THE ANNEXATION OF THE PUNJAUB

AND THE MAHARAJAH DULEEP SINGH

Originally published in 1868 and then in 1882, Major Evans Bell’s The Annexation of the Punjaub and the Maharajah Duleep Singh is a forgotten tract that gives the perspective of a non-Sikh who was in the East India Company’s service. Bell puts forth the truth behind the annexation of the Sikh empire, directly challenging the official narrative. He states, “[h]istorical truth differs very widely from this myth of official origin.”
